A Stereo 500 Series EQ with Boutique Sound

The elysia xfilter 500 Series true stereo 4-band EQ delivers unparalleled audio quality and flexible tone-shaping controls. With its discrete Class A circuitry, you’re able to achieve a beautifully open, boutique sound with impeccable transient projection and solid punch, which is essential for handling instruments. You can also use the elysia xfilter 500’s unique switchable low-cut filter to bring out the high end and fine tune the midrange with mid-peak filter options. And its stepped controls guarantee fast, easy recall. Sweetwater’s advice: from recording to mastering, you’ll find the elysia xfilter 500 module to be the perfect tool for any stage of your recording projects.

Four Active Bands — Plus Passive Massage

With four flexible active bands, the xfilter 500 is amazingly versatile. You can switch its high- and low-shelf bands to high- and low-cut filters with resonance. It offers two mid-peak filters with narrow and wide Q, plus additional low-cut stages with shielded coils for shimmering top end. There’s also an additional passive highpass filter. But unlike most shelving circuits, it exhibits a slight resonance peak at 12kHz and starts to fall of at 17kHz. This makes it perfect for adding a dash of HF brilliance mastering magic to your mixes. Take a look at the front panel and you’ll see that elysia calls this “Passive Massage.” We call it brilliant.

True Stereo Operation

If you’ve ever strapped an analog stereo equalizer (or a pair of mono EQs) across a stem or complete mix, you know it can be a challenge getting the channels to match up precisely — and frustrating to hear the resulting phase shift when they inevitably don’t. It’s even more difficult when the equalizer doesn’t have stepped controls. While many compressors can be linked for stereo operation, most EQs cannot. Why is this? It’s a question of component tolerances. When you’ve got two channels of a mix going through two sets of components, the natural tolerances of components such as capacitors and potentiometers (which, in a linked stereo EQ, run several layers deep) ensure that the left and right filter stages will never behave identically.

Computer-selected Pots for Precise Channel-matching

The xfilter 500 is the answer. It offers true stereo operation with one set of precision-stepped controls that operates both channels. Further, it uses computer-selected dual- and quad-layer pots as well as custom low-tolerance caps. Every pot in the xfilter 500 is bench tested using elysia’s Audio Precision rig and computer programs written exclusively for this task. As a result, only 65 percent of the dual-layer pots and only 50 percent of the quad pots actually go into production. This is a boutique, custom shop feature that sets the xfilter 500 apart from the other stereo EQs we’ve seen. And yet another reason to add this amazing equalizer to your studio setup.
